Why am I Here?
Like many, I suppose, visits to my paternal grandmother's house, Nana H, typically included the sights, if not the sounds, of her crafting paraphernalia: knitting needles, crochet hooks, and her sturdy, almost industrial-looking sewing machine. She was well known for her handicrafts, even going to the extent of weaving her own rugs.
I always envied her flying fingers and seeing the creations she seemingly effortlessly produced on a regular basis. At the age of 11, she tried, albeit in vein, to teach me to knit. Although I desperately wished to learn, my hands and brain just could not coordinate in the task. Yet, somehow, I was able to use chopsticks? ๐ค I promised her then, wayyy back in 1989, that I would learn someday. And I did! It's quite out of the ordinary when i don't have a knitting or crochet project on the go--sometimes even both.
Nana H passed away in 1996; a year later I was gifted my graduation Afghan, a tradition of hers, already completed before her death. A further 3 years later, in 2000, we even found she'd also made my sister's in advance as well! Having succeeded in wool crafts, and keeping my promise to Nana H, is a source of immense pride...Of course now there is another task to tackle, and the reason for this blog: my quest to learn SEWING.
And it's not merely sewing. I want to learn dressmaking. It's been a source of contention, for more years than I wish to admit, of my desire to make my own clothes. Not only do I want the pleasure of the skill, but more so, I want to fill my wardrobe with clothes I can take pride in. I've always loved vintage styles, primarily from the 1930s to the early 1960s. I adore the silhouettes and the elegance, traits I hardly glimpse in today's fashion. This blog is my journey. Now I just need to wait for my new sewing machine to arrive...๐งต๐ฑ
